Rosebank, Johannesburg, South Africa – May 14, 2025
Decentral Energy successfully closed its second renewable energy fund raising in February 2025, following the strong pilot fund raising in 2024. The funds were used to acquire 59 assets with a total value of R550,369,643.
The assets are all on-site solar PV systems across South Africa, ranging from 33 kW to 1.6 MW, with several sites integrated with battery energy storage and existing backup generators. The portfolio spans customers in the retail, residential estates and complexes, industrial, agricultural, and hospitality sectors, supporting their transition to more sustainable, resilient operations.
R308,207,000 was raised from a broad base of individual South Africans. The balance of the funding came from institutional debt provided by Cape Town-based Futuregrowth Asset Management.
The innovative funding structure enabled local investors to benefit from the exceptional tax incentives available under Section 12BA of the Income Tax Act, enhancing after-tax returns while reducing risk.
“This transaction is underpinned by the delivery of a large, distributed portfolio of energy assets, on time and on budget. I am immensely proud of our highly capable technical team for achieving this milestone,” said Luel Culwick, co-founder and executive director of Decentral Energy.
“Small scale, modular, and decentralised systems scale efficiently and so does our model of ownership. We are not just decentralising energy production; we are decentralising ownership itself.
Through our unique structure, everyday South Africans can directly invest in the infrastructure of the future, while our customers benefit from reliable, clean energy. Together, we are building a broad-based, virtuous ecosystem of decentralised energy systems, decentralised customers, and decentralised investors. That is what Decentral Energy is all about.”
This fund raising significantly expands Decentral Energy’s footprint in South Africa’s distributed energy market and reinforces our mission to make sustainable energy – and its economic benefits – accessible to all.
